LOCAL EVENTS OF NOTE:
Thursday Morning "Social" Paddle
This Thursday, September 3, and every first Thursday we're going to do a "social" paddle instead of our normal gonzo workout paddles. Any and all are welcome. We'll meet at Dinky Dock, Winter Park Ollie Avenue, at 7:00 am. If you've been hesitant to come with your recreational boat or just want to meet up with other paddlers, here's your chance. Bring your own boat and just show up. Sorry, no rentals available this month; probably next month Greg Pflug will be available to rent boats. See the upcoming "Meetup" outings and gatherings at http://www.meetup.com/
PADDLING NEWS: Forward Stroke Clinic
The clinic, held at Dinky Dock last month, was attended by paddlers of varying skills; one student was in a kayak for her second time. The students really applied themselves to learning new, more efficient techniques. To assess their progress, they paddled a measured course before and after the class. In spite of a breeze somewhat hindering their paddling at the end of class, they measured an overall increase in stroke efficiency of 17 percent. United State Canoe Association Nationals
Florida paddlers were well represented at the USCA Nationals in Warren, Pennsylvania in August. Bringing home the gold, silver, bronze, etc. were Bob Dean, Laverne Young, Larry Frederick, John Edwards, Anita Allen, Lee Short, Cindy Vogel, Anke Toth, Jack Toth, Karl Vogel, and Terry Streib. Come to the FCPA Tarpon Springs race, September 19, to hear all the war stories. Yukon River 1000
In the inaugural 1000-mile race, Rod Price and Ardie Olson were the first canoe across the finish line down the Yukon River from the start at Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada with a total time of 6 days 8 hours and 54 minutes. That's an average of over 150 miles per day. The next canoe was over 15 hours behind them. They were 5th overall behind 3 tandem kayaks and a voyager 7-man canoe, about 6 1/2 hours behind the overall winners. Of the 19 boats entering the race, 15 finished. Peter Coates organized this event, billed as the "The Longest Canoe and Kayak Race In The World" (I guess they haven't heard of the Ultimate Florida Challenge, 1,200 miles). Missouri River 340
Florida paddlers and WaterTribe members did well in the Missouri River 340 (http://rivermiles.com/mr340/) Paddling Workouts
Our normal paddling workouts on the Winter Park chain of lakes from Dinky Dock are at 7:00 am on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, but changing to a slightly later time soon. Email me to check time. These are workout paddles, however the range of abilities and speed varies. Bring your own boat. Florida Paddling Trails Association
The FPTA, under the leadership of Hank Brooks, has been getting very organized and provides some excellent information on paddling Florida's coastline. The objective is to document a paddling trail completely around the coastline, including camp sites, put-ins, and resupply points. They have published an on-line newsletter, available at http://www. WaterTribe North Carolina Challenge and Marathon, September 24-27, 2009, Cedar Island, North Carolina. Dawn Stewart, who is managing the race along with Kristen Greenaway, says "Full descriptions are on the WaterTribe web site. Check it out on the left sidbar. Come on and join us. These shorter events were put together to allow a Tribe gathering that would lake a bit less time. They are also a perfect start for those considering an Everglades Challenge or Ultimate Florida Challenge next year. Don't just think and dream, JUST DO IT." Registration remains open for these events. 88-mile circuit race (Challenge) or 40-mile circuit (Marathon) starting on the beach on Pamlico Sound at the Cedar Island Driftwood Motel and Campground, around Cedar Island, Neuse River, and Core Sound. The NCC is run as an unsupported, expedition-style adventure race for kayaks, canoes and small boats including sailboats. Although this is a race, many participants are more interested in cruising and adventure. Whether you are a cruiser or racer is up to you; time allows for both. Just getting to the starting line is a major accomplishment. Full details at http://www.watertribe.com ...
